Lars Mlekusch is an internationally active conductor whose artistic path emerged from an initial career as a saxophonist.
Mlekusch has worked with leading ensembles and orchestras such as Klangforum Wien, PHACE, Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, Collegium Novum Zürich, the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Cuba. Engagements have taken him to major venues including the Musikverein Vienna, Wiener Konzerthaus, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ, and Casa da Música, as well as to festivals such as Wien Modern, the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, and impuls.
A central focus of his work is the premiere of contemporary compositions, including those by Laura Bowler, Sarah Nemtsov, Bernhard Lang, and Wolfgang Mitterer. He also maintains ongoing collaborations with influential figures in contemporary music such as Helmut Lachenmann, Georges Aperghis, and Pierluigi Billone.
Mlekusch is Professor at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), where he teaches saxophone, chamber music, and the major subject Conducting Contemporary Music. Prior to this, he served as University Professor at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna. Invitations to give masterclasses have taken him to institutions including the Conservatoire de Paris (CNSMDP), the Royal College of Music London, the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, Tokyo College of Music, and the Manhattan School of Music.
He is regularly invited to serve as a jury member at the most prestigious saxophone competitions.
He received his saxophone training with Marcus Weiss in Basel, Frederick Hemke in Chicago, as well as in private study with Claude Delangle in Paris and Arno Bornkamp in Amsterdam. He studied conducting with Arturo Tamayo in Lugano and privately with Emilio Pomàrico in Milan.

Lars Mlekusch ist ein international tätiger Dirigent, dessen künstlerischer Weg aus einer ersten Karriere als Saxophonist hervorgegangen ist. Mlekusch arbeitete mit führenden Ensembles und Orchestern wie Klangforum Wien, PHACE, Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, Collegium Novum Zürich, dem Slowakischen Radio-Symphonieorchester oder dem Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Cuba. In seiner künstlerischen Arbeit kollaboriert Lars Mlekusch mit Komponist:innen wie Georges Aperghis, Aureliano Cattaneo, José María Sánchez-Verdú, Johannes-Maria Staud, Bernhard Lang, Germán Toro-Pérez, Francesco Filidei, Sarah Nemtsov, Alberto Posadas, Chaya Czernowin, Helmut Lachenmann, Agata Zubel, Simon Steen-Andersen, Klaus Lang, Wolfgang Mitterer und Xu Yi. Dabei hat er zahlreiche Uraufführungen geleitet. Seine Aufnahmen sind auf Labels wie KAIROS, PHACE, Gramola und Col Legno sowie auf vielen Radiosendern erschienen.
Als künstlerischer Leiter mehrerer Festivals in Wien und Zürich hat er erfolgreich mit Institutionen wie dem Wiener Konzerthaus, dem Radiokulturhaus Wien, der Galerie Belvedere, dem ORF oder der Kunsthalle Zürich kooperiert.
Der Austausch mit der jüngeren Generation ist ihm ein besonderes Anliegen. Seit 20 Jahren lehrt er als Professor an Musikuniversitäten, aktuell an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste, davor an der Musik und Kunst Universität Wien und an der Hochschule für Musik Basel. Er findet große Erfüllung in der Zusammenarbeit mit herausragenden Musikern und Komponisten, insbesondere im Bereich der zeitgenössischen Musik sowie als Professor in der inspirierenden Zusammenarbeit mit der nächsten Generation an jungen Musiker:innen.
